Cast of characters in the original Treasure Island novel

Long John Silver was a pirate captain with one leg, the other wooden and a pet parrot what perches on his shoulder and says: "Pieces of Eight." He is the ringleader in assembling a crew of pirates aboard the Hispaniola. He masquerades as a ship's cook to be taken onboard by the unwitting Squire Trelawney, despite the objection of Captain Smollett.

Long John is introduced as the cook for the voyage to Treasure Island. Later, it turns out that he is the one-legged man Billy Bones feared and the major antagonist in the novel. He was one of the Flints’ important pirates. He is the pirate leader during the voyage to Skeleton Island, proving to be a smart and deadly crooked pirate in the novel.

Despite missing a leg, he demonstrates impressive physical and emotional strength. Despite being a cunning, fickle, greedy, and self-seeking personality, he acts genuinely towards Jim Hawkins, who he has taken a shine to. Towards the end of the novel, he escapes from the Hispaniola with his share of gold - and nobody seems to care.
